How To Rock 2020 Like A Boss

Let’s all take a small moment of appreciation that 2019 is over. O-V-E-R. Not to say I’m not grateful for all I’ve learned and the growth I’ve acquired, I am. But if you asked me if I would relive 2019 for a million dollars? Probably not. Yet here we are, gracing 2020 with a deeper sense of self and renewed hope for a fresh start. And in honor of that, I’ve compiled a list of 10 things we can do to make this year the best yet.

Rule #1: Forget 2019.

Alright, that’s a little dramatic, but you get the point. 2019 is officially in the past and that means there’s no need to dwell on what is past. It may have been a great year, or it may have been a not so great year. Either way, what’s done is done, and it’s on to bigger and better things.

Rule #2: Come up with a plan.

So we all want to own 2020, but we can’t do that unless we have some goals in mind. What do you want to accomplish? Write down your goals and aspirations, change you want to enact. They can be big things or small things. Either way, let yourself dream your wildest dreams this year.

Rule #3: Realize that plan may fail, but that’s okay.

As with all good plans, there is a chance for failure. Something may happen that throws everything off. And that’s okay. Don’t let the possibility of failure stop you. There is more growth with failure than there ever could be with success. Dream so big you have no option but to fail a little. Push yourself and push your limits.

Rule #4: Be genuinely optimistic about the future.

Whether or not 2019 was a good or bad year, what’s done is done. We are onto a new 365 days. Whatever you are holding onto, let it go. Now is the year to be openly optimistic about the future. We don’t know what is coming, but we can choose to honor it. The sun will shine again, but until it does, it’s time we become our own sunshine for each other.

Rule #5: Realize the world does not revolve around you or your problems.

It’s human nature, I suppose, to believe sometimes that we are the center of the universe. It’s easy, fun even, to feel like we are important and that our problems are important, but that’s not entirely healthy. Our society today encourages us to pursue selfish behaviors, to think of ourselves above others. But that mindset has us drowning. No more. Rise up and choose differently this year. The world should not have to revolve around you or your problems.

Rule #6: Openly search for your passions and do those things.v

If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it. Don’t sit back and live complacently. Search for your passions, your true passions, and do those things. Even if they seem silly or small or unimportant. Make the effort and do it. You will find parts of yourself you didn’t know existed, and they will change you. You owe it to you this year.

Rule #7: Stop apologizing, feeling guilty, ashamed, and unconfident in yourself. v

You have feelings. I have feelings. Everyone has feelings, good and bad. The real question isn’t how to stop having feelings, but how to feel the right feelings. Feel confident in yourself. Don’t let others influence your decision. Don’t feel guilty for wanting something different than everyone else. Your life is your life. Live it for you. You don’t have to be like everyone else. Be you.

Rule #8: Do something crazy to commemorate the year.

Last, but not least, make your mark. Don’t let this year pass you by with nothing to show for it. Go skydiving, publish that book you’ve been working on, learn to cook, quit your job and move to Italy. You have the power to change your life and you have the power to do something crazy. Now is the time.

Don’t wake up in fear of this new year. It is a great possibility for us, to make a change and an impact. Don’t live in fear or shame anymore. This is our year. Be big. Be bold. Be crazy. Let’s rock 2020!
